Volunteering & Employment

Teen Volunteering (Summer 2024)

The Downingtown summer reading teen volunteering program is open to teens entering 9th grade through those entering 12th grade. The teen volunteer program is designed to provide teens with a meaningful volunteering opportunity that will allow teens with a volunteering requirement to complete most or all of their required hours. Teens will help children and adults register for summer reading, assist children and their parents in redeeming prizes for meeting reading goals, and answer questions about summer reading for children and adults. They will help keep the children’s section and playroom tidy, prepare summer reading fact sheets and materials, and assist as needed with story times and other children’s summer programs. Teen volunteers will gain experience working with people, confidence in providing assistance and answering questions, and a better understanding of programming and activity planning for children.

Teen volunteers can apply for one or more cohorts. Each cohort lasts for one month: June, July, or August. Volunteers must indicate which cohort(s) they wish to be considered for in their application. Teens should be in the area and able to work most or all of their regularly scheduled shifts for the full month(s) for which they apply. Do not select a month during which the teen has vacations scheduled.

Applicants will need to complete a short interview with librarians before being selected for a cohort. Selected teen volunteers will also need to attend one training session before their cohort begins.

June cohort members (volunteering June 8 – June 30th) will be scheduled for 40 volunteer hours, and will generally work 3 shifts per week. Mandatory training sessions for June volunteers will be held in the evening on May 27th and May 29th (attend once).

July cohort members (volunteering July 1 – 31) will be scheduled for 40 volunteer hours and will generally staff 2 -3 shifts per week. Volunteers will need to attend one mandatory training session in late June.

August cohort members (volunteering August 1 – 17) will be scheduled for 20 volunteer hours and will generally staff 2 – 3 shifts per week. Volunteers will need to attend one mandatory training session in late July.

Applications received by May 20th for any cohort will receive priority consideration. Teens may now apply for any cohort. July and August cohort applications will be reviewed once June assignments are complete, so early applicants for July and August may receive their cohort assignments early in the summer.

The final deadlines for applications to be considered for a cohort are:
June cohort applications due no later than May 20th
July cohort applications due no later than June 15th
August cohort applications due no later than July 15th
